At one time Allandale was a separate community. The first station was built by the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Union Railway (later Northern Railway of Canada) in 1853. It was followed by three later stations that includes the last one built by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1900. The station complex consists of three buildings, an office, restaurant and terminal. In its day, the station was regarded as the flagship station of the GTR.

The complex is now owned by the city of Barrie and was tied up in litigation with the former contractor for over 10 years. With the litigation now resolved, plans for the future of the buildings are still to be determined. GO Transit built a station of its own on the property.
